1 Kings was originally one book that contained both 1 and 2 Kings. Both books (1 and 2 Kings) covers from about the years 970 – 561 B.C. One of the main events in 1 Kings is the splitting of the Kingdom. After the death of Solomon, Solomon’s son, Rehoboam, becomes king. After bad judgment on his part, as well as his father’s sin, the kingdom is split into two, Israel will have ten tribes in the north, and Judah will have two tribes in the south. King Solomon was the wisest man on earth. He was taught by his father when young and charged to obey God’s Word by his father before he died. God appeared to him and instead of asking for wealth, Solomon asked for wisdom for leading God’s people. And for all his wisdom, he still fell into great sin. Wisdom is no good unless it is followed. Solomon’s life is a great lesson for us. No matter how far we advance in the Christian life there is always the danger of falling into sin and falling away from God.
