How can our righteousness go beyond the scribes and pharisees? They had an outward righteousness, which we need too, but they did not have an inward righteousness. We have to go beyond them and not only not murder, nor only hold our anger in, but we must love others. And if we truly love others we will seek to reconcile our relationships with those who are offended.
