Rehoboam is now king and has to decided who to listen to. Will he listen to the elders who lived with his father when he was king, or to those he grew up with? Rehoboam will listen to those who he grew up with, and as a result of that decision, along with his father’s sin, the kingdom would divide. Israel, with ten tribes, would be in the north, and Judah, with two tribes, would be in the south. Jeroboam would be king in Israel. But he would choose to disobey the Lord and sin by beginning false worship in Israel. Elijah the prophet was a great man of God, by God’s grace. He was a man of prayer and trusted in God against the false prophets on Mount Carmel. But he was a man who would suffer being downcast, being depressed. His false view of reality helped in this. He, like others, have struggled with being unhappy. William Cowper, the Christian hymn writer, tried to commit suicide more than once. God can help us in our time of need.
