Each person must experience the new birth, when we are born spiritually for the first time. No matter what good we may have done in our lives, without the new birth, we cannot be saved. The new birth is also described as being "born of water and the Spirit." We should not view "water" as referring to baptism, as if baptism saves us. "Water" is best understood as spiritual cleansing.
